FAQ's
Q: Why do I need to see a travel clinic/doctor?
A: Travelers should see a physician before leaving for a trip if they are going to developing countries, going off the usual tourist routes, or if they have any medical conditions that could be affected by travel. Travelers should protect themselves against common diseases that may be mild but that will disrupt their trip as well as protecting themselves against less common diseases that may be serious or even fatal.
Q: What vaccines do I need?
A: Vaccines that are required or recommended depend upon your destination, age, medical history and what you may have already received in the past. You will want to bring your itinerary and a record of vaccines, that you may have already received, with you when you come for your appointment. If you would like to view a general listing of what may be needed, please visit www.cdc.gov and choose your destination. Our physician and nursing staff will evaluate all of your information to determine the risk for any disease and what is recommended for a healthy trip.
Q: How far in advance do I need to make an appointment to visit your Travel Health office?
A: We recommend that you set up an appointment 4 weeks before traveling. If your trip will be for an extended period of time (more than a month) we would like to have you set up an appointment six months before you leave since you may need vaccines that are given in a series.
Q: I am leaving the country unexpectedly, should I still try and make an appointment?
A: We will make every effort to see you before you travel. You may be given vaccines that you will need along with medical education and country information to your destination.
Q: Can I bring a prescription for recommended vaccines from my family physician and have Travel Health give them to me?
A: We have our own physician on staff that specializes in travel medicine. Travel Health will determine what vaccines and/or medicine will be best suited for your individual health needs.
Q: Why are vaccinations expensive?
A: Vaccines, like other medicines, have become expensive over the years. Since many vaccines are made by only one company, the absence of competition for better pricing does not exist. Vaccines do save lives, money and additional medical costs (if you were to become ill from a disease). When chosen carefully, vaccines are a good investment in your personal health.
Q: Does my insurance company cover the cost of vaccines?
A: A few insurance companies cover the cost of vaccines. However, you will need to contact your insurance company for information on your specific policy. Travel Health does not participate in any insurance plans and does not file insurance claims.
Q: How and when do I pay for the services/vaccines?
A: Payment is due upon completion of your visit. Travel Health accepts cash, check and all major credit cards.
Q: Are there group discounts available?
A: Yes, group discounts are available. For more information, please contact our office at 717-972-4222.
